Needless to say, I’ve been very busy this year. On top of getting moved into our farmhouse, raising three daughters (one of which graduated with Academic Honors this month), and enjoying this fantastically busy housing market that’s on the rebound, I got involved in creating a farmer’s market in my town.
My friend, Brad Land, and I got to talking in an Anderson City Beautification meeting this winter about the need in our community for a farmer’s market. In a city of over 55,000 residents, why don’t we have one yet? We do have a few, small scale markets around town here and there with a few vendors, but there is no large, organized, official market. Farmer’s markets are popping up all over the country. They are a booming trend and communities are reaping the reward. Not only do they provide foods for healthier eating, but they are places for the community to gather and smaller businesses to thrive.
The Anderson City Market is supported and sponsored by our city government. They have recognized the need for a market and how it will benefit its citizens. We have been able to create this market at a very low start-up cost for us. It won’t be a financial burden to the city, in fact, it will benefit the city. Proceeds from the market are going towards restoring one of our historic landmarks, The Athletic Pool. We are encouraging entrepreneurship and keeping dollars local. We are also bettering our community. Our slogan is “Buy Local, Grow Anderson.” It’s a win-win for everyone.
When I’ve been out with clients, talking about our community, I’ve been asked on several occasions whether we have a farmer’s market. I’m a problem solver and I knew that this was a real need in our community when I’d heard the question more than once. Other Realtors across the country are getting involved with farmer’s markets. They recognize the potential for improving their communities through them.
